HOW TO CREATE YOUR FAMILY TREE

Sample Family Tree

This is how a finished tree looks — head & partners on top, children with their partners below, linked by red lines.

Step-by-step guide

1 Register & login

Create an account on the main site, then open Family Tree. One account works for both the main site and your tree.

2 Start with the Head of the family

Click Start Family Tree / Create. Enter the oldest man you know (great-grandfather, grandfather, etc.):

• First name & surname (required)
• Date of birth as dd/mm/yyyy (optional but recommended)
• Passport-size photo: JPG or PNG only, max 100 KB, face clearly visible

You may also add his first spouse/partner (optional). The tree is Public by default (you can set Private later in Share Settings).

3 Add more people

Use Add Person to add anyone freely (name, DOB, photo). Or open a person → Edit and use:

• Add Partner — wife, husband, or partner (supports multiple partners / remarriage)
• Add Child — select Other Parent (the correct mother) so children of different wives are linked correctly
• Add Parent — father or mother of that person

4 Link relationships

Open Link Persons when people already exist and you need to connect them:

5 Edit, divorce, death

Click any person on the tree to open Edit:

• Change name, photo, DOB, notes
• Add death date and uncheck “Alive”
• Change partner status to Divorced / Widowed / Married
• Add another partner (remarriage)
• Delete a wrong entry (Head cannot be deleted)

6 Share your tree

Go to Share (Settings):

• Choose Public or Private (radio button)
• Copy your link (example: /ft/share.php?slug=ram-sharma)
• Share the 8-character passcode only with people you trust

Visitors enter the passcode and see the same tree layout (read-only).

7 Find relatives on the site

Link Relative finds matching name + DOB in other users’ trees. Send a request; when both accept, you can view each other’s tree as Extended Family (your own tree is never merged or overwritten).

Photo rules

• Formats: JPG or PNG only
• Maximum size: 100 KB
• Portrait / passport size (taller than wide)
• Face clearly visible — shown in a round frame on the tree

Privacy & settings

• New trees default to Public (link + passcode required to view)
• Switch to Private anytime in Share Settings
• Regenerate passcode if it was shared by mistake
• Only you can edit your tree; shared view is read-only
